Font Choice That Matters: Why I Chose Funny Story for My Coaching Website

I was working on a new coaching website for a wellness entrepreneur who wanted to feel more personal and approachable. The client had a strong brand identity but needed a digital presence that reflected warmth and authenticity. As I started building the homepage, I knew the font choice would play a big role in setting the tone.

Testing the Font in Context

I began by testing several fonts in the hero section of the site. I wanted something that felt friendly yet professional. I tried a few sans serifs and some modern scripts, but none quite captured the vibe I was going for. That’s when I came across Funny Story. It immediately stood out for its soft, handwritten style that felt both inviting and trustworthy.

I placed it over an image banner of the coach in a cozy studio and watched how it interacted with the layout. The font’s natural flow made the text feel like a conversation rather than a formal message. It wasn’t too playful, which is important for a coaching site, but it still brought a sense of personality that matched the brand’s values.

Visual Characteristics and Personality

Funny Story is a script font with a gentle, handcrafted look. Its curves and slight variations give it a unique character that feels genuine. It has a warm and friendly mood, making it ideal for creative projects or brands that want to feel more human. The font’s design is clean enough to work well in digital environments without sacrificing its charm.

I found that Funny Story works best as a display font. It’s not meant for long blocks of text, but it shines in headers, call-to-action buttons, and short phrases. When used in moderation, it adds visual interest without overwhelming the user. For example, I used it for the main heading of the homepage and for the "Get Started" button, where it added a touch of personality without being distracting.

Readability and Layout Considerations

One of my main concerns with any decorative font is readability, especially on mobile devices. I tested Funny Story at different sizes and on various backgrounds to ensure it remained legible. On dark backgrounds, it looked great against light text, but I noticed it could be harder to read on light backgrounds without proper contrast. To address this, I adjusted the background color slightly and made sure the text had enough space around it to avoid overcrowding.

I also checked how the font performed on smaller screens. While it still worked well, I paired it with a clean sans serif font for body copy to maintain readability. This way, the site maintained a consistent hierarchy while allowing Funny Story to stand out in key areas.

Font Pairing and Brand Identity

Pairing Funny Story with a simple sans serif font like Montserrat or Lato created a nice balance between personality and professionalism. The combination allowed the site to feel both creative and trustworthy, which was exactly what the client wanted. I used the script font for headlines and accents, while the sans serif font handled the body content and navigation menus.

This pairing also helped with accessibility. Since Funny Story is more decorative, using it sparingly ensured that the site remained easy to navigate. I made sure to use it only in areas where it would enhance the message without causing confusion.

Using Funny Story in Different Contexts

After settling on Funny Story, I experimented with how it could be used throughout the site. I used it for the logo text, which helped reinforce the brand’s personality. I also applied it to blog headers, course titles, and promotional banners, where it added a subtle but effective visual flair.

For the call-to-action buttons, I kept the text simple and direct, letting Funny Story do the talking. It made the buttons feel more engaging and less generic. I even used it as a decorative accent on social media graphics and email templates, where it added a cohesive feel to the overall branding.

Technical and Licensing Considerations

Before finalizing the font, I made sure to check the licensing details. Funny Story comes with commercial font licensing, which is essential for websites and online stores. I also verified that it supports multiple weights and styles, giving me flexibility in how I used it across different sections of the site.

Additionally, I confirmed that the font is available as a webfont, which means it can be easily integrated into HTML and CSS without affecting page load times. This was a relief, as performance is always a priority in web design.

Final Thoughts on Font Selection

Choosing the right font is one of the most impactful decisions in web design. Funny Story proved to be a great fit for the coaching website, offering a blend of personality, readability, and versatility. It enhanced the brand’s voice without overpowering the user experience.

Whether you’re designing a portfolio site, a boutique store, or a course landing page, Funny Story is worth considering if you’re looking for a font that feels both authentic and professional. It’s a great addition to any Script Amp collection, especially for those who value modern typography and creative branding.
